Weekend Redux

So I’ve finally got a moment to sit down and write. Lisa hinted at violence if I failed to expound fully on the events of last weekend, so I figure it’s best to hedge my bets against that.

First of all, I want to note that Aztec Center finally has wireless (though it’s still technically in a testing phase). What does this mean? It means that now, I never have to leave this place. Starbucks, free wireless internet, starbucks, a couch… I’m set.

Anyway… This weekend was a blast. We all met up in LA (Studio City, technically…). Lisa and Mike were at Mike’s dad’s place in Huntington Beach celebrating a wedding, and I met them up in LA at Adelle’s. We proceeded to the Fox and Hounds Delightfully Appointed Small English Pub … the same place Adelle and I went when I visited her before. A good time was had by all. After that, we went to the nearby McDonalds for some food. There’s something about the Chicken McNuggets everywhere I’ve had them in LA … they’re impossibly dry. This phenomenon doesn’t occur anywhere else… in fact, San Diego McNuggets are quite delicious. We took the food back to Adelle’s and popped ina movie. Sleep followed. Lisa and Mike got up pretty early to return to Huntington Beach. Adelle and I visited Jamba Juice before she had to go visit her parents (who recently returned from Italy)… and I was on my way.

The rest of the week has been rather eventless thus far, though the end of last week was pretty cool … I was elected President of the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts Council, and I won the Outstanding Contribution to Student Government award at the Aztec Achievement Awards on Thursday.

Other than that… yeah. Updates later if I remember.

I want to be President of the Banana Republic. It would fulfill my goals of running a nation and I’d get clothes too.

This weekend, I went up to LA with Lisa and her boyfriend Mike to visit Adelle again. It was a blast. This morning, I had Jamba Juice in Studio City. How LA is that?

I find I have to be in a blogging mood to write here, and I usually get in that mood about 10AM on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. So I’ll post more here tomorrow :)

It seems I can’t watch the news for more than ten minutes without becoming entirely enraged. Sure, it’s the media, and enraging people is one thing they do… but I’m not getting mad at the ‘bad people’ or the ‘un-Americans’ or anything like that. I’m angry at CNN and the American people. Allow me to elaborate:

  • CNN has fallen. They were a strong voice a few years ago, reporting news as objectively as they could. But now they’ve failed. Their newscasters have emotive voices. They interview people for minutes at a time where the only audible noise is crying and wallowing. This is unprofessional and irresponsible.
  • The American people should stand up (if they’re able to … I’m not trying to be discriminatory or anything…) and shut off their televisions. Nothing constructive comes from American television news, and Americans need to realize that the only information they’re getting are coming through the emotional filters of the news agencies.
  • Jessica Lynch needs to shut up. Yes, what happened to her may (or may not…) have been a tragedy, but everyone seems to overlook one very important fact: she volunteered. If someone volunteers to go into a WAR, they should not be allowed (by either moral or legal standards) to milk their fifteen minutes for personal benefit. That’s exactly what she’s doing. Don’t get me wrong .. if one of my friends came back from Iraq (and there are many of them) with wounds or having suffered some injury, I’ll have sympathy for them. But if they write a book, go on television, or take money for their story for a movie, I’ll be angry. Sorry. Getting wounded in a war is not creative.
  • All of these people attacking President Bush need to shut up. The first book had a point, and this new one is just a damn copy of it. Everyone knows Bush isn’t exactly the best president we’ve had, and publishing books about it doesn’t do anything but enrich the authors. (Don’t people that work for the government have some sort of confidentiality thing?)
  • Repeat after me: i-ROK, not EYE-rak; SAW-di, not SOW-di; NOOK-lee-ur, not NOOK-ya-lur.
  • Take the Halliburton truck drivers that are praying THEY CAN RETURN TO IRAQ off of television. They’re truck drivers. In Iraq. With American logos on their HUGE TARGETS. They’ll get shot at. Only a moron would think otherwise. Not to mention this praying thing. They’re PRAYING THEY CAN RETURN TO IRAQ… to their jobs. And they’re hoping that when they return, they can carry sidearms. Halliburton is not and can not be in the business of marque and reprisal. Being shot at in his Halliburton truck has ‘changed everything’ for this southern man that could stand to lose some weight. And he needs to take off the moustache. He realizes what he has at home now. At least he has a shred of heart.
  • Next up on CNN, ‘Do you owe it to your country to serve in the military?” Answer: no. Do you owe it to your country to own a gun? No. To develop nuclear weapons? No. To allow troops to quarter in your home in times of peace? No. to pay your taxes? Yes. Perhaps we should make a tradeoff. Taxes are optional if you’re willing to serve in the defensive force. And vice versa.
  • CNN is covering the outcome of the television reality show ‘The Apprentice’ as if it were actual relevant news. Reality television needs to end. People need to get off their ass and live their own lives. During the clips of these reality shows on CNN, the important news goes whizzing by in tiny letters at the bottom of the screen. I’ll wager you if you ask a group of a hundred random people, they could tell you volumes about Omawhatshername and couldn’t tell you what Hamas is. Sad. Kill your television… unless you can distinguish between fantasy and reality. And NBC sitcoms are good. (smile, Adelle…)

Yeah, that’s my rant for this evening. Now I’m going to see if there’s anything on television that isn’t inane.

    The Weekend

So I’ve pretty much sucked at updating this in the past week or so. Having two exams and two papers on top of everything else will pretty much do that to you. So what’s been up? Well, let’s see… Economics test, Conflict & Conflict Resolution test, National Security Policy paper (read it if you’re bored…) Got a B on the first test in that class. It’s a fun class. The teacher said on the first day of school that any noteworthy event in the news relating to national or international security was fair game for the final. The world is my textbook. Talk about a hell of a test to study for.

AS and Lambda Chi are going well. The rest of the year should be pretty stable in that regard.

Lisa and I went shopping today. We were going to see ‘Kill Bill vol.2′ (I’ve still only seen about 75% of the first movie…) but we realized partway there that the theatre would probably be sold out. So we got Starbucks and Cinnabon instead. Then, we shopped. I got a shirt at J.Crew for $29.95, originally $59.50. Decent, I figure. Then we came home, split a pizza, and I managed to find time to update my blog to boot.

I think that’s about it for now. Might go to the beach tomorrow if I get a chance. That’ll be nice.

So, it’s been a while since I last blogged… I thought I was getting pretty good at being consistent there for a while. Anyway, the biggest thing that happened between the last blog and now is that I went to LA to visit Adelle, and to Santa Barbara to visit Naj, Dusty and Nate.

LA was great; I really miss having Adelle around. We went out to an Irish pub and then to McDonalds. On Saturday, I took Adelle to Art’s Delicatessen on Ventura Boulevard, where I had my first Monte Cristo sandwich in years. Thereupon, we returned to Adelle’s, watched Will and Grace, and I drove to Santa Barbara.

In Santa Barbara, I hung out at Naj’s place for a while, and then we walked around Del Playa for a bit. It was fun and relaxing. That weekend was probably the first time I’ve been able to relax in quite some time. This upcoming weekend I’m mostly free as well, though I have a Policy Paper to do for my National Security class.

Speaking of which, it’s about time I leave for that class.
